In November this year, the UN Conference on Climate Change – COP26 – is taking place in Glasgow, UK. The conference brings together heads of state, climate experts and campaigners to agree how countries should tackle the climate crisis.
Leading up to and during the conference, Quakers around Britain will be taking action to put pressure on the UK government to commit to essential climate targets and to place justice at the heart of solutions to climate breakdown, and protect life on earth.
How can you play a part?
Exchange letters or emails with a Quaker in another country and share your experiences of the climate crisis
Friends World Committee for Consultation (FWCC) is working with Britain Yearly Meeting (BYM) to connect Quakers around the world as Pen Pals, to learn more about the human impacts of the climate crisis and how it is threatening the world we love. In correspondence with one another, Friends can discuss the commitments we would like to see governments make at COP26, as well as exploring how Quakers can call on governments to do this.
Why get involved?
FWCC and Britain Yearly Meeting want to support wider Quaker engagement in the political process and help bring the experiences of those on the frontline of the climate crisis to the climate talks in 2021. Putting our faith into action and speaking truth to power can be challenging, but Friends all over the world can offer vital spiritual support to those undertaking this work through sharing stories, listening, learning together, and of course, upholding one another.
What might this involve?
- Monthly email or letter exchanges with your Quaker pen pal
- Attending an online gathering to share feedback and emerging themes
- Exploring how Quakers in Britain can support social action on climate justice in other countries
- Using information gathered in your correspondence in meetings with politicians calling for climate justice
The FWCC World Office will offer support and guidance throughout the project. The project will run for a limited time between February and December 2021.
